The Komperdell FX Lite TI Vario are marketed primarily as hiking/ trekking poles that are self-deploying, lightweight and packable and they excel in this role. But I think for all but the elite competitors, these fantastic poles would also be just perfect for ultra runners as well as any outdoors enthusiasts looking for lightweight, easily deployable poles.

While not the absolute lightest poles on the market, (they are not marketed as being so) their aluminium construction strikes a balance between weight savings and durability, making them suitable for a wider range of activities than just trekking. Potentially using them for backpacking, mountaineering and trail running.
We tested the poles over two walks, one was a light walk through forest trails, which they were perfect for. The other was where my curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to put them to the test on a hill walk with a fully loaded pack. To my surprise, they held up admirably, with no flex, no problems, showing nothing to be worried about under the demanding use of a heavy pack.
The tip provides excellent grip on loose surfaces, and the ergonomic extended foam grip remains comfortable even when my hands get sweaty.
The self-deploying mechanism is a true game-changer. With a quick twist and lock, the poles are ready to go, eliminating the hassle of assembling multiple sections. The four sections/ three sections (there are three sections but one of the sections has a telescopic function, I counted this one as two) fold down to a compact 41cm, easily fitting into a backpack or even a running vest.
The maximum length of 135cm is suitable for my height (181cm), but taller users (6 ft 4 and above) might find it a bit short, especially on steep descents. I appreciate the included FXP UL Vario basket, which adapts to different terrains, and the overall build quality from Komperdell is second to none, these poles feel rock solid and reliable.
While the price point is higher than some entry-level poles, the Komperdell FX Lite TI Vario’s combination of lightweight design, self-deploying convenience, and expected Austrian durability makes them a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking a versatile and reliable pair of trekking poles.

They easily fit into my daypack, and can also be easily strapped to the exterior or pushed into a side pocket making them ideal for those who value a minimalist approach to their gear with easy packable kit.

Talking about locks, the Komperdell’s Powerlock 3.0 system is here once again, we recently saw these in the Komperdell Explorer Compact, these industry-leading locks are crafted from forged aluminium, ensuring a secure and reliable connection between the pole sections. Once your length adjustment is set and locked, they stay in place.
The shafts appear to be reinforced which contributes to the pole’s overall durability, and I haven’t experienced any bending or flexing even on challenging terrain. The adjustable length (115-135cm) accommodates a range of user heights (5 ft to around 6 ft 4), though taller hikers might find the maximum length slightly limiting. But if that is the case Komperdell have a huge selection of poles, so give them a look for the more range.
Comfort and Grip
The Trail Pro 245 Foam grip with its extended grip zone offers a comfortable and secure hold, even during long hikes or sweaty palms. The Comfort Padded wrist strap provides additional support and can be easily adjusted for a personalised fit. The tip is solid and ensures reliable traction on various surfaces, and the FXP UL Vario basket can easily be switched in and can help you adapt to different softer terrains.
We do prefer the cork to foam, however, the extended grip from Komperdell is unmissable. Once you get used to being able to adjust your grip over the extended grip area for ascending and descending without changing pole length, we think you will never go back to a single-hand grip again.
