Have you ever dreamt of swimming in a crystal-clear loch, a gently meandering river, or even the vast ocean, surrounded by nothing but nature’s beauty? That’s the magic of wild swimming! It’s exhilarating, refreshing, and – let’s be honest – a bit of an adventure. And the best bit, it is accessible to almost everyone! No matter of age, shape, fitness etc.
If you’re a newbie, don’t worry! We’re about to dive into everything you need to know before taking that first, exciting plunge. This is just an overview, we have lots of open water swimming articles covering almost everything here in greater depth, so have a look around. Enjoy.
Safety First, Fun Second!
Okay, before we get carried away with the romance of it all, let’s talk safety. Wild swimming is amazing, but it’s important to be prepared:
- Cold Water Shock: Brrr! Jumping into cold water can be a shock to the system (literally!). Your body might react with rapid breathing and a racing heart. The trick? Ease in slowly, let your body adjust, and never jump or dive in unless you know the water is deep enough. In the UK it is very rare that the water is warm!
- Hypothermia: Stay Toasty If you start shivering uncontrollably or feel confused, it’s time to get out! Hypothermia is when your body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Listen to your body, and don’t push it too far. Dryrobes are great for getting your heat back fast!
- Check the Scene: Before you strip down, scope out the water. Is it calm? Are there any strong currents or hidden obstacles? Start with shallow, easy-to-access spots until you gain confidence.
- Buddy System: Never swim alone! Bring a friend, or at least tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
Gear Up, Get Ready For Outdoor Swimming
Alright, now for the fun part – gear! You don’t need a ton of fancy equipment, but a few essentials will make your experience much more enjoyable: For all the shiny toys, check out our full outdoor swimming gear list.
- Swimsuit: Duh! Pick one that’s comfy and makes you feel confident.
- Wetsuit (Optional): If the water’s chilly or you plan on staying in for a while, or you just don’t like the cold, a wetsuit will keep you warm. Think of it as a cosy hug from the sea! – Best Plus Size – Best Standard Swimming
- Towel/Changing Robe: A big, fluffy towel is a must for warming up afterward.
- Swim Cap & Earplugs: Keep your head and ears warm, especially in colder water.
- Goggles: See the underwater world clearly!
- Neoprene Gloves, Booties, & Hood: If you’re feeling extra brave in icy waters, these will add some serious warmth.
Prep Your Body, Prep Your Mind Like A Pro Open Water Swimmer
Before you jump in, take a few minutes to prepare:
- Acclimatisation: If you’re new to cold water, start with short dips and gradually increase your time. Your body will thank you!
- Warm-Up: A few jumping jacks or stretches will get your blood flowing and help prevent muscle cramps.
- Breathe Deep: Take a few slow, deep breaths to calm your nerves and prepare for the cool water. Become a Wim Hoffer or Ice Bather.
Take the Plunge & Enjoy the Ride!
It’s time! Wade in slowly, letting the water embrace you. Remember:
- Listen to Your Body: If you’re feeling too cold or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to get out.
- Savour the Moment: Take in the beauty around you, the feel of the water, the sense of freedom. This is your wild swimming adventure!
After the Dip
Dry off quickly, wrap yourself in that cosy changing robe or towel, and maybe treat yourself to a warm drink. You did it! You’ve experienced the joy of wild swimming. Now, where to go next?
Remember: Start slow, be safe, and most importantly, have fun! Wild swimming is an incredible way to connect with nature and challenge yourself. So, what are you waiting for? The water’s calling!
