Before loading up the drum, it’s important to understand that “smokeless” does not mean magic; it means smart engineering. The Outsunny 48.5cm uses a secondary combustion system built directly into its double-walled structure.

When you light a fire, primary combustion happens at the base. Cold air enters through the bottom outer vents to feed the fuel. Simultaneously, air travels upward between the double metal walls, superheating along the way. When this hyper-heated oxygen exits the inner holes at the top of the rim, it collides with the rising smoke (unburnt fuel) and ignites it. This secondary burn effectively consumes the smoke before it ever escapes the pit.

Does it work? Yes—with a caveat, a caveat that applies to all smokeless fire pits we have tried. During the first 10 to 15 minutes, as the wood begins to burn and the metal walls heat up, you will experience standard smoke. Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided. However, once the inner core reaches optimal temperature, the secondary combustion kicks in visibly. The smoke virtually disappears, replaced by a beautiful central fire and the occasional “jets” of flame shooting out of the upper inner rim holes. It delivers an incredibly clean burn, provided you keep your wood dry and below the vent line.
Heat Output & Burn Time
Because the secondary burn forces the fire to consume its own fuel more efficiently, this fire pit burns hot and fast. The matte black metal body radiates heat exceptionally well for its compact 48.5cm footprint. It is one of the hottest most radiant firepits we have ever tested. Backed by warmth and FLIR imagining. (see below) Expect a single load of tightly packed hardwood to give you a roaring, high-intensity burn for about 45 to 60 minutes before needing a top-up. And yes, the fuel will burn down to ash! The trade-off for a smokeless fire is that it consumes wood slightly faster than a traditional open bowl. But worth it for the smokeless experience.

Below is a series of images and video from my Flir camera. I was using the Ulefone Armor Mini 20T Pro, these show the progression of the outer case heating over time. Gradually heating until the whole firepit is white-hot and then slowly cooling down as it consumes all the fuel. When the firepit is uniformly hot all over, this is when the secondary ignition really kicks in.
NOTE: my FLIR camera maxes out at 150c, this sensor is for fine detail variations, not max temps.

Expert Field Note: There is a 65cm poker included, it is fantastic and a necessary safety addition. Because the inner basin runs incredibly hot to maintain the secondary burn, you’ll need that extra length to safely adjust shifting logs without getting your hands too close to the rim. Most manufacturers do not include a poker.

To get the absolute most out of the Outsunny’s 40cm inner diameter basin, you cannot just throw logs in haphazardly. A smokeless pit requires a specific loading technique to trigger that secondary combustion. I found this out firsthand, but here is the technique you need.

The Outsunny’s efficiency relies heavily on fuel quality. For a spectacular, low-smoke burn, avoid softwoods (like pine or spruce) which contain high sap and resin that spit sparks and create excess soot. Instead, always choose kiln-dried hardwoods:

Birch: Ignites quickly and produces a bright, beautiful flame, though it burns down faster than oak.
Ash: Provides a steady, reliable heat with minimal smoke production.
