The Caveat

Yes, this is the caveat. Please do understand that this is a common flaw with all gloves of this construction. It is not brand but product specific. Micro fleece liners are brilliant when the hands are dry; the gloves slip on, but when rain starts and the hands get wet, and you reach for your micro fleece lined glove, you will find they no longer slide on. They clamp on, and the layers that the glove is made of now move independently of each other. In the field, it took me three attempts to get the right hand glove on when my hands were wet. And when I got it on it was not flush, it was bumfelled on the inside.

Why does this happen? Putting on hill walking gloves with microfleece liners when your hands are wet can feel like a frustrating battle, but it actually comes down to basic physics and design. A thin layer of water on your skin creates capillary surface tension that acts like a temporary adhesive against the fabric. At the same time, wet skin generates significantly higher friction, and damp synthetic fibers lose their slick texture, causing the fleece to grab hold of your fingers rather than sliding smoothly over them.

Compounding the problem, most fleece liners are unbonded and only stitched at the cuff and fingertips. The moment you force a damp hand inside, this loose inner fabric twists, inverts, and bunches up in the narrow finger channels. To solve this on the trail, wearing thin silk or merino wool base-layer liners creates a smooth, low-friction barrier, while switching to modular glove layering systems designed for wet weather can eliminate the hassle altogether.

If you know it is going to be wet, or it starts to rain, dry your hands as best you can first or use a pair of thin silk or wool liner gloves. Not needed if it’s just windy.
