Grip & Mud-Shedding: Vibram N45+ Megagrip in Action
Scottish hillwalking is legendary for chewing up footwear. Paths quickly morph from wet peat to slick granite slabs, exposed tree roots, and deep heather tussocks.
The MTN45 Mid GTX is built on Danner’s exclusive Vibram® N45+ Megagrip outsole, featuring an expanded perimeter traction platform.
The Reality on the Hill: Many modern hiking boots suffer from shallow lugs that instantly pack with thick clay or saturated muck, effectively turning your soles into slippery slicks. The lugs on the MTN45 are noticeably aggressive and wide-set. On wet ascents and greasy grass slopes, the boot bites firmly, shedding muck and grit with every stride rather than trapping it.
Wet Rock Performance: Vibram Megagrip remains the benchmark compound for greasy, polished mountain rock, giving confident purchase where other rubber compounds fail.
Weatherproofing & Upper: GTX Invisible Fit Meets Top-Grain Nubuck
GORE-TEX Invisible Fit: Instead of a traditional internal bootie liner that floats between the shell and your foot, Invisible Fit bonds the waterproof membrane directly to the outer nubuck leather. The difference is immediately apparent: zero interior bunched fabric, no friction hotspots over the instep, and what feels like solid breathability on long walks.
Top-Grain Sanded Nubuck: The upper offers a rich, velvet-like exterior that shrugs off water while providing genuine structural toughness and longevity.
360° Wrap-Around Rand: Extending right around the perimeter of the boot, the polyurethane-coated leather protective rand acts as an armoured bumper. When scrambling through scree, kicking through coarse heather stalks and just general life on the hill, the rand shields the high-wear junction where the upper meets the midsole from cuts, scrapes, and water intrusion.
Midsole & Trail Feel: Heavyweight Protection, Lightweight Agility
Historically, getting solid ankle support and serious durability meant hauling around rigid, heavy leather stompers.
The MTN45 changes that dynamic with its nitrogen-infused EnduroFoam+ midsole:
Energy Return: Supercritical nitrogen foam (widely used in high-end road running shoes) absorbs repeated shock without feeling dead or sluggish underfoot. An almost trainer-like feel in a walking boot!
Underfoot Shielding: Beneath the foam sits an integrated TPU rock plate. Even when stepping directly on jagged stones or sharp bedrock, there is zero underfoot bruising. Often missing in cheaper boots.
Agility: Built on Danner’s DT-6 last featuring an 8mm drop, the boot encourages a natural forward roll. It does not feel clunky or bottom-heavy; instead, you get an agile, mobile cadence that keeps foot fatigue low on 10 + mile mountain days.
What is a Boot Last?
The Blueprint for Fit: Leather or synthetic upper materials are stretched, pulled, and formed tightly around the last during manufacturing to give the footwear its final anatomical shape.
Dimensions Defined: It dictates specific physical traits like the toe box shape, instep height, heel volume, and arch profile.
Fit, Ankle Support & The Break-In Reality
The Fit Profile
The DT-6 last draws inspiration from trail running silhouettes:
Forefoot: Generously roomy. It allows the toes to splay naturally during steep descents without ramming the front bumper.
Heel & Ankle: Deep heel pocket that locks the rear foot securely in place. Even with thick merino wool walking socks, the heel lift was virtually non-existent.
Hardware: Heavy-duty metal eyelets and secure locking hooks allow for precise zonal tensioning over the instep and cuff.
The Break-In Period
Honesty is crucial here: this is not an out-of-the-box trainer-style hiking shoe.
Because it utilises quality top-grain leather and a structured TPU chassis, we were expecting the usual required adjustment period. But it was not there; these were decently comfortable straight out of the box.
However, unlike rigid 4-season crampon-compatible boots that can take weeks of painful blisters, the MTN45 settles in comfortably after two or three shorter walks (around 8 miles total), softening slightly while keeping its structural integrity.
I do not know what kind of magic Danner is using, but other brands need it.
Women’s UK Sizing Danner
Note: I am a UK size three, probably the smallest adult female boot size. Throughout my early days on the hills, I often bought kids’ boots as there were no big brands offering technical boots at this size point. And the extra cost justified neither additional technology nor features over the kids’ boots. The adult boots readily available were from brands that mostly service the entry-level walking crowd and, to their credit, offer a good entry-level boot often at a very affordable price point. However, these were always basic boots. Basic water resistance, no rock plate, no rand or limited rand, basic moulded grip etc. It is great to see that the industry is changing and that I, as a woman with small feet, can now get a fantastic pair of boots with all the right features and technology that my husband has taken for granted, so thanks Danner. Other brands, take note!
Sustainability & Value: Is £270 Justified?
At £270, the Danner MTN45 Mid GTX is an investment piece. In a market flooded with disposable fast-fashion walking shoes designed to be trashed after a few hundred miles, Danner’s construction approach stands out:
Recraftability: This boot is eligible for Danner’s official re-crafting services, including professional boot stretching, deep cleaning/conditioning, and full resole packages (note: the bonded Invisible Fit liner cannot be replaced).
Cost Per Mile: When cared for with proper leather conditioner and waterproofing wax, a boot with an armoured rand and a re-soleable chassis can outlast multiple pairs of lightweight synthetic walking boots.
Warranty: Supported by a full 365-day manufacturer’s warranty.
This is a boot that you will wear for a long time, through many adventures.
Who is this boot for?
Perfect For:
UK & Scottish Mountain Walkers: Anyone frequently navigating wet grass, peat, bogs, uneven roots, and rocky mountain paths across spring, summer, and autumn.
Hikers wanting room and stability: Walkers who need a wide forefoot and firm ankle lockdown without stepping up to a rigid, clunky 4-season mountaineering boot.
Long-Term Value Seekers: Walkers who prefer maintaining and resoling high-grade leather footwear over buying throwaway synthetics every season.
- Small Women’s Sizing: Women looking for a technical boot with all the features.
Look Elsewhere If:
You need a winter crampon boot: The MTN45 is a dedicated 3-season boot and lacks the rigid welt and extreme thermal insulation required for technical Scottish winter climbing.
You want immediate, zero-break-in softness: If you demand slipper-like flexibility on day one, an ultra-lightweight synthetic trail shoe might suit you better (at the expense of wet-weather durability and protection).

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Danner MTN45 fit compared to standard street shoe sizes?
We found the MTN45 fits true to size, should be the same for most walkers, featuring a slightly wider forefoot via the DT-6 last to accommodate natural foot swelling over long distances. If you consistently wear thick, cushioned mountain socks, sticking with your standard hiking boot size or going up a half size provides ample room.
How do I maintain the nubuck leather and GORE-TEX Invisible Fit upper?
Brush off dried peat, mud, and grit with warm water and a soft-bristle brush after every muddy outing. Avoid direct radiator heat to dry them; let them air-dry with insoles removed. Regularly recondition the nubuck with a silicone- or water-based nubuck proofing spray to preserve breathability without darkening or saturating the leather nap.
Can the Danner MTN45 Mid GTX be resoled?
Yes. Danner includes the MTN45 in its recrafting catalog for outsole replacements, boot stretching, and stitching repairs, significantly extending the working life of the leather upper.
